Busan Korean (부산말 / 경상도 사투리, Gyeongsang dialect spoken across Busan and the Gyeongsang-do provinces) is the most prestigious regional dialect in South Korea, distinguished from tonally-flat Seoul standard by a phonemic pitch-accent system inherited from Middle Korean and lost almost everywhere else (Hamgyong is the other holdout). Stereotyped as "kkonggi-bal" — gruff, rough, blunt — the dialect carries strong masculine and military associations, reinforced by ex-presidents Park Chung-hee and Kim Young-sam (both Gyeongsang natives) and by the Lotte Giants baseball club, whose Sajik Stadium chants are a national cultural anchor. Phonologically marked: -노/-나 sentence finals, simplified vowel inventory (ㅡ/ㅓ merger), and tonal HL minimal pairs (가가 가가? "Was that family the one?"). Heavy lexical retention of native verbs lost to standard.
