Mandarin Chinese (普通话 pǔtōnghuà / 國語 guóyǔ / 華語 huáyǔ) is the world's most-spoken language by native speakers (~920M L1) and a Sino-Tibetan language of the Sinitic branch. Standard Mandarin is based on the Beijing dialect and is co-official in the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, and Singapore (one of four), and a working language of the United Nations. It uses Han characters in two main forms: Simplified (PRC + Singapore, reformed 1950s-60s under the script-simplification scheme) and Traditional (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, much of the diaspora). Standard Mandarin has 4 lexical tones plus a neutral tone (mā/má/mǎ/mà/ma) and SVO analytic morphology — virtually no inflection; meaning is conveyed through word order, particles, and serial-verb constructions. Hanyu Pinyin (1958) is the canonical romanization; Bopomofo / Zhuyin remains taught in Taiwan. Literary tradition spans 3,000+ years, from oracle bone inscriptions through the Four Great Classical Novels to Lu Xun, Mo Yan (Nobel 2012), and contemporary cinema/web fiction.
