Jeolla Korean (전라말 / 전라도 사투리) is the southwestern dialect group of the Honam region, comprising Jeollabuk-do, Jeollanam-do and Gwangju Metropolitan City. Distinctive markers include the sentence-final endings -이라/-디(요), -랑께(요) (vs. standard -다/-지요/-거든요) and characteristic pitch patterns. Culturally it is the home of pansori (UNESCO ICH 2003) — the epic narrative singing tradition centred on the Jeolla shrines of Namwon — as well as Jeolla cuisine, regarded as the richest regional gastronomy in Korea (hanjeongsik banquet meals). Long stereotyped in Seoul-centric media as a "warm, hospitable" voice, the dialect also carries strong Honam regional identity tied to the May 18 Gwangju Uprising of 1980 and to the political base of presidents Kim Dae-jung (Mokpo native) and Roh Moo-hyun. Mutually intelligible with standard Korean.
