Cape Verdean Portuguese (Portuguese: português cabo-verdiano; locale pt-CV) is the national variety of Portuguese in Cabo Verde and the country’s official language. It is used in government, law, formal education, much national media, and a substantial written literature, while most Cabo Verdeans speak Cape Verdean Creole, or Kriolu, as their first and everyday language and learn Portuguese through schooling. Formal Cape Verdean Portuguese largely follows European Portuguese grammar and contemporary Portuguese orthography, but local speech has recognizable pronunciation, rhythm, vocabulary, and usage shaped by sustained bilingual contact. Features and command of the variety differ by island, education, generation, and formality, and code-switching is common in informal settings. Cape Verdean Portuguese must therefore be distinguished from Kriolu, a separate Portuguese-lexifier Creole language with its own regional varieties and grammar.
