French in Luxembourg (language tag fr-LU) is standard French as used in the Grand Duchy, not a sharply bounded dialect with one uniform accent. Under the 1984 language law, Luxembourgish is the national language and French is the language of legislation, while French, German, and Luxembourgish may be used in administration and the courts. French is prominent at work, in government, secondary and higher education, the judiciary, commerce, and media, supported by many Francophone residents and cross-border workers. Formal writing follows standard French orthography and grammar, but pronunciation and everyday usage vary with speakers’ multilingual backgrounds and contact with Luxembourgish, German, Belgian French, and neighboring Lorraine. Local practice includes administrative and legal terminology, place and institution names, and frequent code-switching; the label therefore identifies a national setting and range of registers rather than a single Parisian pronunciation.
