French (Ivorian)

Ivorian French comprises the localized forms of French used in Côte d'Ivoire, where French is the official language and a major lingua franca in education, administration, media, and interethnic communication. It is not a single uniform dialect: speakers move among educated Ivorian French, popular Ivorian French, and more informal urban practices according to setting and background. Pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary have developed through sustained contact with the country's many languages, including Akan, Mande, and Kru languages, and local words and meanings are widely shared. Nouchi, which emerged among young people in Abidjan, is a particularly innovative urban register drawing on French, Dioula and other Ivorian languages, plus some English and Spanish. Formal writing generally follows international French orthography, while local forms carry strong national and urban identities.
