Portuguese (Mozambique)

Mozambican Portuguese is the national variety of Portuguese used in Mozambique, where Portuguese is the sole official language and serves in government, education, national media, and communication across language communities. It is a first language for a growing urban population but a second language for many other speakers; the 2017 census reported a strong urban-rural difference in its use. Historically based on European Portuguese, it has developed local patterns of pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar through multilingual acquisition and sustained contact with roughly twenty Bantu languages. Contact is especially visible in locally established words and meanings, as well as variable choices of prepositions, pronouns, and agreement in informal speech. Formal writing generally follows the Portuguese standard, while everyday usage varies by region, generation, education, and first-language background.
