French (Haitian)

Haitian French is the regional form of French used in Haiti and by Haitian communities abroad; it is a distinct language variety from Haitian Creole, not another name for it. The two languages coexist in a highly unequal bilingual setting: Haitian Creole is the common language of all Haitians, while access to French is more closely associated with schooling and has traditionally been concentrated among part of the population. Haitian French generally follows standard French grammar and spelling but has recognizable local pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary, and expressions shaped by Haitian history and continuing contact with Creole. It is used in government, education, literature, journalism, and other formal domains, often alongside Creole. Haiti's constitution declares both Creole and French official, and explicitly identifies Creole as the language shared by all Haitians.
