Öömrang
North Frisian (Öömrang)
Indo-European
Öömrang is the North Frisian dialect of Amrum, one of the North Frisian Islands off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Together with Fering — the near-identical dialect of neighbouring Föhr — it forms the insular Föhr-Amrum group, one of the nine traditional dialects of North Frisian, a West Germanic language of the Anglo-Frisian branch. It is spoken by only a few hundred of Amrum's roughly 2,300 inhabitants and is severely endangered, though still transmitted locally and taught in the island's school. Öömrang diverges sharply from the mainland Mooring dialect: 'water' is weeder, 'fire' ial, 'father' aatj, 'I' ik, 'two' tau. It is written in the Latin script with the Fering-Öömrang orthography, documented in the Fering-Öömrang Wurdenbök of the Nordfriisk Instituut.
