English (Geordie)

Geordie most narrowly denotes the English dialect and accent of Newcastle upon Tyne and Tyneside, although the name is often applied more broadly to North East English. The wider region is not linguistically uniform: Tyneside differs from Wearside, Teesside, Northumberland, and Durham, and usage varies by age, class, and style. Traditional Tyneside features include monophthongal FACE and GOAT vowels, a conservative MOUTH vowel that may sound like [uː] in broad speech, and the absence of the FOOT–STRUT split; current speakers use these features variably. Local grammar and vocabulary include forms such as gan “go,” bairn “child,” canny, and divn't “don't,” as well as constructions shared with neighboring northern dialects. A substantial corpus of recordings from the 1960s onward documents both continuity and change, so Geordie should not be treated as an unchanged relic of Old English.
