Spanish (Uruguayan)

Uruguayan Spanish (español uruguayo; language tag es-UY) is a national variety within the Rioplatense Spanish continuum, closely related to but not derived from Argentine Spanish. It is spoken throughout Uruguay and in diaspora communities, with regional and social variation, especially near the Brazilian border. Most speakers use seseo and yeísmo rehilado, merging ll and y as a postalveolar fricative that may be voiced [ʒ] or voiceless [ʃ]; syllable-final /s/ may be aspirated or deleted in informal speech. Voseo is widespread, but Uruguay also has tuteo and mixed patterns such as tú with voseo verb forms, distributed by region and register. Formal writing follows general standard Spanish, while local vocabulary marks Uruguayan identity and northern border communities maintain Spanish–Portuguese bilingual repertoires, including Uruguayan Portuguese varieties.
