Spanish (Bolivia)

Bolivian Spanish (language tag es-BO) comprises the Spanish varieties used by most of Bolivia’s population, both as a first language and alongside Indigenous languages. It is not uniform: western highland speech belongs to Andean Spanish, the central valleys show intermediate patterns, and eastern lowland varieties share features with neighboring lowland and Río de la Plata speech. Highland varieties often preserve syllable-final /s/, retain a distinction between ll /ʎ/ and y /ʝ/ among many speakers, and use assibilated rhotics; eastern varieties more often weaken final /s/ and make wider use of voseo. Centuries of contact with Quechua and Aymara have shaped highland vocabulary, discourse, and some grammatical patterns, while Guaraní and other languages influence eastern speech. Formal writing follows general standard Spanish, while regional vocabulary and usage remain important markers of Bolivian identity.
