Spanish (Nicaragua)

Nicaraguan Spanish is the national variety of Spanish spoken in Nicaragua and a member of the Central American dialect continuum. Voseo is part of ordinary educated usage: vos with forms such as cantás, comés, and vivís is the usual familiar singular address, while usted marks greater distance or respect. Its pronunciation generally shows seseo, yeísmo, a weak [h]-like /x/, velar [ŋ] for final /n/, and especially frequent aspiration of syllable-final /s/, although complete deletion is variable. Pacific and central varieties differ from Caribbean speech, where Spanish coexists with Miskito, English-based Creole, and other languages. It uses standard Spanish spelling, while local vocabulary reflects Indigenous languages, colonial history, and shared Central American usage.
