Spanish (Ecuadorian)

Ecuadorian Spanish (Spanish: español ecuatoriano; locale es-EC) comprises several regional varieties rather than a single accent, chiefly those of the Andean highlands, Pacific coast, and Amazonian region. All generally show seseo, but highland speech around Quito, Cuenca, and Ambato tends to preserve syllable-final /s/ and may have assibilated rhotics, while coastal speech more often weakens or aspirates /s/. Some highland communities retain a distinction between /ʎ/ and /ʝ/, although yeísmo is widespread elsewhere. Long-standing contact with Kichwa and other Indigenous languages has shaped vocabulary, grammar, and discourse, particularly in the Andes. Spanish is Ecuador’s official language and standard orthography is used nationwide; Kichwa and Shuar hold official status for intercultural relations, while other ancestral languages have official use in their own areas.
