Salvadoran Spanish is the national variety of Spanish spoken in El Salvador and belongs to Central American Spanish. Most speakers use a three-way address system in which vos commonly signals closeness, tú occupies some intermediate or marked contexts, and usted expresses distance or respect, although distribution varies socially. Common pronunciation traits include seseo, yeísmo, weakening of /x/ to [h], velar syllable-final /n/, and aspiration of /s/ in several positions; voiced stops may be relatively tense after sonorants. The vocabulary includes many Salvadoran and wider Central American expressions and historical loans from Nawat, the country's surviving Indigenous language. Standard Spanish orthography is used in education and public life, while local speech remains regionally and socially diverse.
