Honduran Spanish is the national variety of Spanish spoken across Honduras and belongs to the Central American dialect area. It shows substantial regional variation: aspiration or loss of syllable-final /s/ is strongest in Caribbean and southern lowlands, while western and interior speech often preserves /s/ more consistently. Other widespread tendencies include seseo, yeísmo, weakening of /x/ toward [h], and a velar realization [ŋ] of syllable-final /n/. The address system combines vos, tú, and usted; vos commonly marks familiarity, while usted can also occur within families in some social groups. Standard Spanish orthography is used, but everyday speech has a rich Honduran vocabulary and reflects contact with Indigenous and Caribbean languages.
