Panamanian Spanish (Spanish: español panameño; locale es-PA) is the national variety of Spanish and the official, predominant language of Panama. It forms a transition between Central American and circum-Caribbean dialect areas rather than a single uniform accent: urban and coastal lowlands share many Caribbean features, while interior and western speech may retain more Central American patterns. Seseo and yeísmo are widespread; aspiration or loss of syllable-final /s/, velar word-final /n/, and weakening of intervocalic or final /d/ are common but vary by region, social group, and formality, while /tʃ/ becomes [ʃ] for some speakers. Tú and usted predominate in address, with voseo persisting especially in Azuero and parts of western Panama. Vocabulary reflects sustained contact with English through the Canal and Afro-Caribbean migration, as well as with Ngäbere, Guna, and other Indigenous languages.
