Amharic (አማርኛ Amarəñña) is the federal working language of Ethiopia, with ~32M L1 speakers and ~25M L2 — making it Africa's second-largest Semitic language after Arabic. It is the language of the Amhara people, native to the central highlands (Gondar, Bahir Dar, Dessie), and serves as the lingua franca of urban Ethiopia far beyond Amhara Region. Written in the Geʽez (Ethiopic) abugida — ~280 fidel characters arranged as 33 base consonants × 7 vowel orders — inherited from the liturgical Geʽez of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (and still the script of the related liturgy). Typologically SOV with elaborate verbal morphology: distinctive root-and-pattern Semitic system (consonantal roots filled with vowel patterns to mark tense/aspect), gender-marked subject and object agreement, and a rich system of compound verbs. The 13th-century rise of the Solomonic dynasty (under Yekuno Amlak, 1270 CE) made Amharic the imperial lingua franca, displacing the older Geʽez court language; Emperor Haile Selassie's 20th-century centralization further entrenched its national role.
