Najdi Arabic is a group of Peninsular Arabic dialects centered on the Najd plateau of central Saudi Arabia, including Riyadh, Qassim, and Ha'il. Major subgroups are often described as northern, central, mixed northern-central, and southern Najdi, so no single pronunciation represents every speaker. Common conservative features include historical /q/ pronounced [ɡ], retention of interdental consonants in many words, and the gahawa pattern, in which a short [a] appears after a guttural consonant in certain syllable shapes; some dialects also affricate /k/ and /ɡ/ in particular environments. Verbal morphology marks person, gender, number, tense, and aspect, and pronominal suffixes attach to nouns, prepositions, and verbs. Najdi is chiefly spoken in daily life, while Modern Standard Arabic is used for formal writing and official communication, normally in Arabic script.
