Refleja siglos de sustitución lingüística y contacto con el galés, así como el contacto con dialectos ingleses vecinos; la influencia galesa suele ser mayor en las zonas bilingües del norte y el oeste, mientras que Cardiff y las regiones fronterizas presentan pautas propias.
