Malayalam (മലയാളം Malayāḷam) is a Dravidian language with ~38M speakers, official in the Indian state of Kerala plus the Lakshadweep and Mahé/Puducherry territories. It is closely related to Tamil and diverged from Middle Tamil around the 9th-13th centuries — the two are sister languages within the South Dravidian branch. Recognized as a Classical Language of India in 2013. Linguistically distinctive for its extensive Sanskrit-influenced literary register (manipravalam style mixing Sanskrit and Dravidian) alongside the colloquial Malayalam — Kerala's historical Brahmin-court culture absorbed far more Sanskrit lexicon than Tamil retained. The Malayalam script is a Brahmic abugida descended from the Grantha script (~9th c.) and shares its origin with Tamil. Kerala has the highest literacy rate in India (96.2%, 2011 census) — one factor being widespread Malayalam-medium primary education and a vibrant Malayalam press (the daily Malayala Manorama is among the world's highest-circulation newspapers). Notable typological features: SOV agglutinative, palindromic case marking, and an extensive system of compound verbs.
