Aragonese (Aragonés) is the surviving Romance language of the central Pyrenees in the historical kingdom of Aragon, an intermediate variety between Spanish, Catalan, and Occitan. Heavily marked by its medieval scripta — used in royal charters of the Crown of Aragon — it is now critically endangered, with perhaps 25,000 active speakers concentrated in the Pyrenean valleys of Hecho, Ansó, Chistau, and Ribagorza. Revitalization efforts have run since the 1970s under the Estudio de Filología Aragonesa.
