English (Welsh)

Welsh English (also called Anglo-Welsh; project code en_wls) comprises the English accents and dialects spoken in Wales rather than one uniform national variety. It reflects centuries of language shift and contact with Welsh, as well as contact with neighbouring English dialects; Welsh influence is generally strongest in bilingual northern and western areas, while Cardiff and the border regions have distinct patterns. Features found among some speakers include tapped or trilled /r/, comparatively full unstressed vowels, post-stress consonant lengthening, and characteristic intonation, but rhoticity and h-dropping vary greatly by place and social group. Local vocabulary and grammar also contain Welsh loans and calques, while formal writing follows British English conventions. English is widely used across public life, alongside Welsh, which has statutory official status in Wales and must be treated no less favourably.
