El inglés moderno temprano (c. 1500-1700) es la reconstrucción pedagógica del inglés del Primer Folio de Shakespeare (1623), la Biblia del rey Jacobo (1611), Marlowe, Donne, Jonson y Milton. Se distingue del inglés medio (enm) por el Gran Cambio Vocálico (en curso), la pérdida de la mayoría de las flexiones, el orden de palabras SVO fijo y la estandarización tras la imprenta de Caxton (1476). Las reconstrucciones de la pronunciación siguen el trabajo de David Crystal sobre la Pronunciación Original (OP) empleada por el Shakespeare's Globe Theatre: /aː oː/ largas parcialmente desplazadas, /iː uː/ convirtiéndose en diptongos, estado anterior a la escisión FOOT-STRUT («sun» = /sʊn/), /r/ rótica en todas las posiciones, /eː/ en lugar de la /iː/ moderna en «meat/sea». Es la forma que se enseña en las aulas de todo el mundo para leer a Shakespeare y la KJV — distinta de cualquier vernáculo regional concreto del siglo XVII, que variaba enormemente entre Londres, las Midlands y el West Country.
