Maranao is the language of the Maranao people of the Lanao region of Mindanao, predominantly Muslim. Its name (literally 'people of the lake') refers to Lake Lanao, the country's second-largest lake. Vocabulary shows extensive Arabic and Persian influence from Islamic contact since the 14th century. Historically written in Jawi (Arabic-derived) script; now mainly Latin.
