Mandar (Bahasa Mandar) is a South Sulawesi Austronesian language closely related to Bugis (bug) and Makassarese (mak), spoken in the West Sulawesi province (Sulawesi Barat, separated from South Sulawesi in 2004). The Mandar people are renowned seafarers traditionally building distinctive sandeq sailing outriggers used for Pacific deep-sea fishing. Like Bugis and Makassarese, Mandar historically used the Lontara Brahmic-derived abugida; Latin is now dominant.
