Komi-Permyak (перем коми кыв) is one of the two Komi languages, spoken in the Komi-Permyak Okrug of Perm Krai, Russia, with ~63-90K speakers. Distinct from Komi-Zyrian (kpv) in vocabulary and phonology though closely related — they diverged after the 14th-c. Christianization by Saint Stephen of Perm but remain ~80% mutually intelligible. Together with Komi-Zyrian and Udmurt forms the Permic branch of Uralic. Co-official in the Komi-Permyak Okrug (incorporated into Perm Krai in 2005, losing autonomous status). Uses an extended Cyrillic alphabet (with Ӧ ӧ for /ɘ/) developed in the 1920s by Vasily Molodtsov, replacing the older Anbur alphabet created by Stephen of Perm in 1372. Has 16+ grammatical cases including the rich locative case series (inessive, illative, elative, prolative, etc.) typical of Uralic languages, agglutinative morphology, and SOV word order.
