Philippine English (language tag en-PH) is a nativized variety used throughout the Philippines, mostly as an additional language but also as a home language for some urban Filipinos. The Constitution designates Filipino and English as official languages for communication and instruction, while regional languages have auxiliary official roles. Developed through American-era schooling, English remains prominent in government, education, law, media, business, and international communication. Philippine English is generally rhotic and often has more syllable-timed rhythm and fewer vowel contrasts than mainstream American English, but pronunciation varies with first language, region, education, and social setting. Formal writing largely follows American conventions, while local coinages, semantic extensions, borrowings, and code-switching with Filipino and other Philippine languages mark everyday usage.
