Newar (Nepāl Bhāsā, नेपाल भाषा) is the historical language of the Kathmandu Valley, with ~860K speakers in Nepal. The language of the Newar civilization that built the medieval Malla kingdoms (Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur), it has a literary tradition going back to the 12th century — making it one of the few Tibeto-Burman languages with substantial classical literature, including works in lyric poetry, drama, and Buddhist/Hindu religious texts. Historically written in multiple scripts: Ranjana (decorative), Prachalit Nepal (cursive), and others; today predominantly in Devanagari. Recognized as a national language of Nepal by the 2015 constitution.
