Wuyuan Hui (婺源徽语) is the Hui Chinese variety spoken in Wuyuan County, northeastern Jiangxi, a county historically belonging to the Huizhou cultural region. The second edition of the Language Atlas of China groups it with Qimen in the Qi–Wu branch of Hui Chinese, revising older classifications that placed Wuyuan in the Xiu–Yi branch. Speech varies within the county, and field studies of localities such as Shichun document phonological systems distinct from both Standard Mandarin and other Hui varieties. Like Hui Chinese more broadly, Wuyuan speech lies in a transition zone among Wu, Gan, and Lower Yangtze Mandarin and shows layered contact effects in pronunciation and vocabulary. It is generally written with standard Chinese characters, has no separate official status, and is increasingly used alongside Standard Mandarin.
