Lanyin Mandarin (兰银官话) is the northwestern Mandarin sub-branch — named for its two prestige cities Lanzhou (Gansu) and Yinchuan (Ningxia) — with ~17M speakers across Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, and parts of Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia. Its tone system is simplified relative to Standard Mandarin, with only 3 tones in some sub-varieties. The region is the heartland of the Hui Muslim minority, and Lanyin Mandarin shows distinctive Arabic and Persian loanwords for religious and cultural concepts entering through Hui-Islamic networks (e.g. nián for "year" via Persian sāl-related calques in Hui register; cf. 经堂语 "scripture-hall language"), as well as substrate contact with Tibetan, Mongolic, and historically Tangut languages.
