One Script to Rule Them All
The Mongol Yuan dynasty (1271–1368) was the eastern heartland of the Mongol empire — the largest contiguous land empire in history, whose western khanates by then ruled separately from Persia to Russia. Its court spoke a babel of tongues — Mongolian, Mandarin, Tibetan, Uyghur, Persian — each with its own script. In 1269, Kublai Khan commissioned his imperial preceptor, the Tibetan monk Drogön Chögyal Phagpa (1235–1280), to solve this problem with a single alphabet.
The Design
Phagpa adapted the Tibetan script — itself derived from an Indian Brahmic alphabet — into a new vertical form. The result was 八思巴字 (Bāsībā zì in Mandarin, named after the monk himself). Key features:
- Written top-to-bottom in columns, left-to-right — unlike its Tibetan parent, which runs horizontally. The vertical, left-to-right column layout follows the Uyghur-derived Mongolian script that Phags-pa was meant to replace.
- An abugida: each consonant carries an inherent vowel, with diacritics for other vowels.
- 41 basic letters — extended to roughly 48 with extra letters for Tibetan and Sanskrit — designed to capture sounds across Mongolian, Chinese, Tibetan, Sanskrit, and Persian.
- Official use on seals, paper currency, imperial edicts, and inscriptions on stone steles found from China to Iran.
Why It Failed
The script was never truly popular. Chinese literati clung to Han characters; Mongolians already had their own Uyghur-derived script. Phags-pa was legally mandated for official documents but practically ignored in daily life. When the Yuan dynasty fell to the Ming in 1368, the script was largely abandoned within a generation. Only scattered stone inscriptions, coins, and a handful of manuscripts survive.
The Hangul Hypothesis
Here is where things get controversial. In 1443, King Sejong of Joseon created Hangul (訓民正音, Hunminjeongeum). Some scholars — notably Gari Ledyard in his 1966 dissertation — argued that Hangul's square block structure and certain letter shapes were inspired by Phags-pa. Both scripts share an unusual feature: letters combine into syllable blocks rather than running in a simple linear sequence.
Others counter that Sejong explicitly described his letters as modelling the shape of the vocal tract (牙舌脣齒喉, the five articulatory positions), and that the resemblances to Phags-pa are superficial. The debate remains alive in Korean linguistics. What is certain: Sejong's court was aware of Phags-pa through Yuan-era Sino-Korean scholarly exchange.
A Ghost in the Machine
Phags-pa had one lasting indirect effect: it is one of the richest phonetic records of Chinese ever written in an outsider's alphabet. Tibetan-script transcriptions of Chinese from Dunhuang are some four centuries older, but Phags-pa covers the lexicon far more systematically, and what it captures is Old Mandarin, not Middle Chinese. Because the script was phonemic rather than logographic, linguists use Yuan-era Phags-pa spellings to reconstruct the exact consonants and vowels of 14th-century Mandarin in a way that Han characters alone cannot reveal. Tone is the one thing it withholds: Phags-pa writes no tone marks at all, so syllables differing only in tone are spelled identically — the four tone categories have to be read off the way the Yuan rhyme dictionary Menggu Ziyun (蒙古字韻) lists its Han characters, level-rising-falling-entering, under each Phags-pa spelling. In this sense, Kublai Khan's failed universal script became an unintentional time capsule for the history of the Chinese language.
