Composed in what is now northwestern Pakistan around 500–400 BCE, the Aṣṭādhyāyī — the "Eight Chapters" of Pāṇini — gives a generative description of Sanskrit in just under 4,000 sūtras (terse aphoristic rules). The complete grammar fits in roughly 35 modern printed pages. Linguists including Leonard Bloomfield, Paul Kiparsky, and Noam Chomsky have discussed its formal analysis in relation to later work in linguistics and computer science.

We know almost nothing about Pāṇini the person — only that he was from the village of Śalātura (modern Lahor / Lahur, sometimes called "Little Lahore", near Attock in northwestern Pakistan — not to be confused with the major Punjabi city of Lahore), probably worked in the 5th or 4th century BCE, and that everything he produced was apparently designed to be memorized aloud. The Aṣṭādhyāyī was preserved by recitation for centuries before being written down. To save syllables — and therefore breath — Pāṇini invented an entire technical metalanguage: a system of single-letter abbreviations, ordered phoneme lists called the Śiva sūtras, conventions for "context-sensitive" rule application, anuvṛtti (rule inheritance from a previous line that need not be re-stated), and a precedence system for resolving which rule applies when two rules conflict.

The result reads, to a modern eye, uncannily like the production rules of a context-free grammar — only more powerful. Pāṇini's rule format is essentially:

A → B / X _ Y
"A becomes B in the context where it is preceded by X and followed by Y" — a notation that linguistics independently rediscovered in 1968.

Pāṇini's influence can be traced directly in later scholarship. Leonard Bloomfield (1887–1949), one of the founders of American structural linguistics, wrote his 1927 essay "On Some Rules of Pāṇini" in part to introduce Pāṇinian rule-ordering to Western grammatical theory. The Dutch Indologist Frits Staal argued in "Euclid and Pāṇini" (1965) that Pāṇini's grammar is a formal system of the same order as Euclid's geometry; two years later the computer scientist Peter Zilahy Ingerman, in a letter to Communications of the ACM, proposed renaming Backus normal form the "Pāṇini-Backus form" in Pāṇini's honour. The Indian-American computer scientist Rick Briggs, working at NASA Ames in the 1980s, proposed Sanskrit-style kāraka representations as a natural intermediate language for AI knowledge representation. In the preface to his 1965 Aspects of the Theory of Syntax, Noam Chomsky wrote that "even Pāṇini's grammar can be interpreted as a fragment of such a 'generative grammar,' in essentially the contemporary sense of this term."

Sanskrit itself (saṃskṛta-, "polished, refined") was already a literary and ritual standard rather than a vernacular in Pāṇini's day. It was subsequently formalized in the terms his grammar set out: in principle, every well-formed sentence could be derived from its 4,000 sūtras. That is comparable to the expectation placed on a parser today. The Aṣṭādhyāyī provides an unusually precise early model of how a language can be described through generative, formal rules.
